My brother purchased an attachment similar to this one on ebay from U. General Supply or Sears back in the 70's. After mounting to a bench, and attempting to use it. We learned how to sharpen drills by hand. He has a couple other type drill sharpeners around here that weren't any good either. A bit off topic, but I've got a German made drill grinder called a Cawi-Spiral.
Big machine that sits on the floor with a pretty complex geared head that rotates the drill half a revolution for every turn of the head. Just curious to know if Don's ever seen one of these critters or anyone else for that matter or knows anything about them, since I've never seen one anywhere on the internet or otherwise. I thought they were Italian! Hi Joe, Where I used to work we bought a pair of these from an odd-lot sale at the local toolmonger's. The retail price we discovered seemed like a lot of money for a cast aluminum "housing" that held an odd-sized face grinding wheel, and a bunch of drill holding stops and fixtures made from welded-up angle iron and pieces of cold rolled.
I tried my darndest to make them work, but found the set-up to be cumbersome and open to screwing up without knowing it. Ultimately, it was back to off-hand grinding for me, and the Champs went Ebay-bound. If you'd like I think I saved some of the literature regarding the wisdom of the inventor's take on drill geometry, and would be happy to fax it or mail you a copy.
Keep looking, IMHO. We have one of the larger ones in our shop. It sits under a blamket of dust these days. If you read the literature that comes with it, it becomes apparant that it will sharpen a drill bit using what he calls "facets", in other words, several straight angles ground onto each flute. I find that rather strange, and the machine is downright cumbersome and very slow to use. Save your money. The adjustments seem pretty crude. No better than , and maybe worse than the "General".
For that sort of bucks, I'd clearly be expecting nicer protractor adjustments, etc, etc. This permits finer finish yet faster, coolergrinding action with coarser wheels. Simultaneously, it eliminates wheel grooving; minimizes heat, glazing and loading. As toolsare ground across the rim, the wheel wears down on the same parallel plane. This constitutes automatic wheel dressing which increases diamond dresser and wheel life while allowing the operator to concentrate fully on the grinding operation.
The six jaw chuck accurately centers the drill which ensures that the cutting lips are ground equally Drill Bed Features: Locking System: Drills into place using wheel's rotational force on drills face, twists and locks drill in locating plate. Dual Bed System: Lower support bed is adjustable and locks for lip clearance and drill point angles supports the detachable upper bed.
Screw Tip: The thread tension bar is an adjustable locking type stop Lip Angle Extension Gage: Extends an exact amount of drill point beyond the drill bed. Boss System: Operator oscillates the upper grinding mechanism back and forth across the grinding rim's full width. Features: Grinds a 2" diameter drill in under 2 minutes Drill Capacity: No.
This includes a balanced wheel because of the design that permits dressing both the wheel face and side grinding rim with the same dresser The only grinding machine that grinds flat-faced drills up to 3" diameter Complete Unit Includes: Sharpening mechanism lip angle extension gage Diamond dresser Lamp and grinding wheel Motors are totally enclosed, fan-cooled and have ball bearings on both ends.
