I'm also thinking about this digital UW thing. I've been shooting topside digital for a while, but I always seem to wind up with a personal pocket camera that doesn't fit in a decent housing yes, better choices of cameras would be a good start.
And while I regularly use a digital SLR an older Rebel but its fine for the company's purposes for business topside, I'm not going to put myself in position of explaining how I flooded the company camera on a personal shoot. If I could get the strobe working wth a digital system, that could let me spend some money on a camera and housing. But can it? Others have told me "there are ways Some talk of German converters, or switching it to a slave mode.
Or maybe I was hearing them vaguely. Messages Reaction score 34 of dives - I have no connection with Ikelite other than as a customer. I have a few SSs that work, and will share the little that I know.
I've asked Ikelite about battery rebuilds, no response. I suspect there is no business case for supporting such an old product. Their current products work very well, and it's probably pointless to support something this old that generates absolutely no revenue.
A lot of my dead battery packs are from , way out of support life. The silence from Ikelite folks on this topic speaks for itself. Physically, it's a little tricky for a non technical person to open up the old battery, but dropping in new batteries is not a problem for a competent electronics tech. You would probably want to use NiCd batteries so that you can use your old charger.
If you swap in new batteries, you might get another 10 years out of it. As you know, it's a workhorse. I got a good buy on a batch of D cell NiCd batteries and will renew some of my dead packs with them, just so I can use my old chargers. The newer NiMH batteries have twice the energy storage, but need new chargers.
Just be aware of that. The camera must be in manual mode, so that it does not emit "preflashes" which would trigger the too early. You can play around with shutter and aperture settings to get the exposure just right, so manual is not really a crippling limitation. Many prefer it. So, yeah, with a lot of limitations you can make it work on those housings that are compatible with your Nikonos cord. If you want to use Ikelite housings, you would need a new Ikelite cord, non-TTL type, and you would be limited to manual strobe control as I said.

Simply point the Controller at a camera housing for dependable strobe triggering by the camera strobe without requiring fibre optic "sync cord" nonsense of other strobe systems. The Controller attaches to the strobe and mounts near the housing, providing maximum versatility and control of flash exposure. Life moves quickly underwater and you need to be able to react instantly when your lighting needs change. Shooters who use manual strobe exposure settings prefer our large, click-stop dial controls which provide intuitive, tactical feedback of exposure setting.
The robust dial controls are now even larger and taller for comfortable use with even the thickest gloves. A slide lock prevents the strobe from accidentally being turned on when not in use. I have been using Ikelite strobes since about , having exhausted several generations and two color schemes! Ikelite has always offered a robust build, high power and reliability.
That is very important to me in the field. Your strobe is only as powerful as the batteries that drive it. Commercially available batteries do not have the low internal impedance required for truly fast recycle times. Even the best rechargeable AA batteries are sluggish in high-powered strobes and only get slower and weaker as their charge drains. Our custom rechargeable cells power high frame rate firing from the first shot to the last.
These premium quality industrial grade NiMH cells have been proven to out perform alkaline and lithium cells in real world underwater conditions, including the temperature fluctuations and storage conditions of the photographer diver. While 5 years is the average lifespan of a rechargeable pack, we routinely talk to shooters who are happily using year old NiMH battery packs.
The battery pack attaches quickly and easily with a unique toggle lock that prevents accidental floods. You don't even need to lubricate the o-ring. DS series strobes equip me with enough high quality light in my arsenal to match even the strongest of ambient light conditions - from lighting foreground subjects under backlit sun balls to illuminating the tiniest of details on the translucent tentacles of anemones.
